GAME-WORN COLLEGE JERSEY SELLS FOR $1.38MM
When it comes to basketball card packs and sports memorabilia for sale, there have certainly been some record-breaking sales over the years. This is especially true as of late, since new investors are entering the industry with interest in everything from baseball trading cards to basketball hobby boxes. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that a game-worn Michael Jordan University of North Carolina basketball jersey sold for a whopping $1.38 million at Heritage Auctions.
"As the final price tag proves, this jersey has everything any serious collector could possibly want" said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage Auctions.
ABOUT THE MICHAEL JORDAN JERSEY FOR SALE
Based on historical photos, the jersey was matched to the 1982-83 NCAA season, when Michael Jordan won the NCAA Player of the Year award from The Sporting News. He then wore that same jersey on his award magazine cover.
So, how did the Michael Jordan jersey come to be for sale at Heritage Auctions? The UNC jersey was first obtained in 1983 when equipment managers from Stanford and North Carolina traded player jerseys after a game during the Stanford Invitational tournament at Maples Pavilion. This isn't the first time the jersey has changed hands, either. It sold for $63,500 in 1999, which was a record at the time.
RECORD-BREAKING BASKETBALL CARD PACKS & BEYOND
This $1.38MM Michael Jordan jersey for sale was certainly record-breaking. Looking back, a game-worn Chicago Bulls Jordan jersey from the 1986-1987 season sold for $480,000.
This isn’t the first time that a Michael Jordan memorabilia for sale has broken records, either. Not long ago, a Michael Jordan rookie card sale caught the attention of many trading card enthusiasts when it sold for $725,000. Across the entire trading card industry, from baseball cards to basketball packs and memorabilia, there is a lot to be excited about.
